Step 7
Deliver the item to the patron.
7a: Delivering a loan.
Questions to answer:
- How will you circulate interlibrary loan items? (through the OPAC; generating on-the-fly records; other?)
- How will you mark an item as an ILL? (stickers, bookbands. Need different colors for different types of loans?)
- How will you keep the paperwork that accompanies a return, including the owning library's mailing label? (staple to bookband, file)
- How will you notify the patron that a loan is ready to pick up? (e mail, phone, through OPAC hold message)
- How do you determine the due date? (on OCLC workform; give patrons a due date that is a little earlier than that)
- Is it possible to renew an ILL item? (request from owning library)
- How will you flag special restrictions and enforce them? (no ink, no photocopying, library use only, return in a box, etc.)
7b: Delivering a photocopy.
Things to think about:
- Electronic delivery: what will the message say? what will the copyright notice say? how long will items remain available for patrons? How long until they delete from the server?
- Workflow for delivering articles electronically that are received in paper.
- Physical (paper) pickup for articles: how will you notify patrons their articles are available? How long will you keep photocopies that are not picked up?
